Department staff is 18 co-workers including 2 DSc, 13 PhDs. The Department includes Laboratory of  Photonics Oxide Nanosystems (Head of Lab PhD N.P. Smirnova). From 1986, the Department researchers have published 5 chapters in collective books, 250 scientific papers, and obtained 5 patents for inventions; 1 DSc and 12 PhD theses were defended.

 

Directions of investigations

Theoretical analysis of thermal effects in the laser heating of solids taking into account the finite speed of heat distribution.

Resonance and coherent effects of quantum electrodynamics in the light field, dynamics of interacting quasiparticles in the field of coherent laser beams, surface micro/nano-structuring in the field of intense laser radiation.

Study of self-organization mechanism of photchromic molecules on Au(111) surface and gold nanoparticles; development of downscaled nanoresistorce with optically controlled electrical resistance.

Investigation of antioxidant properties of plant extracts, identification of extract components, finding correlations between extract composition and their antioxidant properties, studies on antioxidant properties of synthetic flavonols and their complexes with transition metals; synthesis of composites based on natural/synthetic antioxidants and highly dispersed silica using adsorption technologies.

 

Main results for the recent years

It has been shown that intense laser radiation allows micro/nano-structuring of semiconductor surfaces. The properties of laser-induced surface periodic structures depend on the laser wavelength and semiconductor ablation characteristics.

Using the Comsol Multiphysics software package, the temperature distribution in semiconductor plates has been modelled. It has been shown that femtosecond laser pulses enable efficient heating of crystalline silicon samples, with the near-surface 5 mkm thick region to be heated the most.

The light-induced and STM-tip-induced switching of photochromic diarylethene self-assembly on Au(111) has been investigated in ambient conditions. For such a purpose, the highly ordered domains of open-ring (1o) or closed-ring (1c) diarylethene isomers were created. The STM-tip-induced switching for the 1o isomer characterized by a tip bias threshold of 1000 mV above which switching of all molecules of the ordered 1o domains occurs into the 1c isomer was established. In contrast, switching from 1c form into 1o form is not observed at the same tunnelling conditions within a domain formed by ordered 1c molecules. It has been shown that the process of switching of the 1o isomer is determined by geometry of the molecules. The stability of resulted monolayer of 1c isomer depends on the nature of the surrounding isomers. The cooperative switching under the action of external UV light of terphenilasol-based diarylethene molecules from 1o into 1c form was demonstrated nevertheless that it cannot occurs under the action of STM tip.

Nontoxic biodegradable matrix based on gelatin and silica have been proposed for the preparation a new prolonged action drugs. The addition of silica to gelatin increased the time of the dissolution of the materials in aqueous medium and decelerate desorption of incorporated bioactive compounds. It is shown that the properties of silica-gelatin materials are affected by the silica-gelatin interaction, adsorption of gelatin on silica surface and the presence and nature of biologically active substances. It has been found that aqueous-ethanol extracts of Magnolia sieboldi K. Koch., Magnolia kobus DC. Engl., Magnolia soulangeana Soul.-Bod., Magnolia stellata (Sieb.et Zucc.) Maxim leafs exhibit high antioxidant properties. The addition of extracts to silica-gelatin matrix does not affect significantly their swelling and dissolution. Qualitative composition of the extracts was determined. Biocomposites based on selected extracts and silica-gelatin matrices were created. Biocomposites obtained are characterized by relatively slow release of antioxidants into aqueous medium and can be used as new prolonged action drugs.

 The antioxidant activity of Zn(II) and Fe(III) complexes with synthetic derivatives of flavonol was evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging method. The flavonol complexes show antioxidant properties comparable to-Zn(II) those of the parent flavonols. It has been revealed that complexes of flavonols with ferric ions are stronger than that with zinc ions. It has been found that iron substitutes zinc in Zn(II)–flavonol complex and binding of metal-prooxidant by flavonol occurs. The Fe(III) flavonol complexes are potential free-radical scavengers with the same activity against free stable radical as the initial flavonols.
